Welcome to Alnwick/Haldimand Township
Thank you for your interest in visiting here, the official web site of Alnwick/Haldimand (A/H) Township, to
discover our “treasure” located in south-eastern Ontario. One of seven municipalities in Northumberland
County, A/H is centrally located, being adjacent to three other municipalities, both the east and west, and
bound to the south by Lake Ontario and to the north by Rice Lake.
Alnwick/Haldimand is referred to by many, as the “Beautiful Township between the Lakes”.
Highway 401, which extends the full length of southern Ontario runs through A/H making destinations like, Toronto, Montreal, Niagara Falls and the north east American states quite accessible.
On behalf of Council and staff I would like to a few minutes to tell you a little more about our community and life style. First settled in about 1797, the township’s first residents were made up of United Empire Loyalists, attracted by large unencumbered land grants, sometimes in the thousands of acres. Today, while driving local roads, one can see many examples of homes, schools, churches and cemeteries from the 19th century that dot the countryside.
The township is rural based with agriculture being the largest contributor to the general economy. Grain cash crops, milk, livestock, vineyards and apple farming are all viable in the area. Agriculture surrounds the seven (7) hamlets and settlement areas in the township, the largest being Grafton, in the south along Highway 401 and, Roseneath located on County Rd. 45, close to Rice Lake and the 500+ seasonal cottages.
What is unique about the township, and why is it a great place to live, work and play? First it’s the people, both long time residents and those moving from urban centres for retirement and/or a quieter lifestyle, work collaboratively to maintain a safe, environmentally friendly living space. Next, is the breathe-taking topography, the rolling, hills, the lakes, the inland streams, the trees and forest, and finally, it’s the culture and recreation. Rice Lake is noted for being one of the best sport fishing lakes, numerous golf courses, trails for snowmobile, atv, walking ,hiking and biking, bird watching or sport hunting, we have it all.
If you are a tourist and coming for a visit, we hope you have an opportunity to check out some or all of these locations in A/H Township: Northumberland County Forest, Alderville First Nation Reserve, Golden Beach Resort, Peters Woods Nature Trail and St. Anne’s Spa and of course the renowned Roseneath Carousel.
Again welcome to Alnwick/Haldimand. Whether a resident, season resident or visitor I hope you enjoy our community and we invite you to make comments by using our web site links.
Stay safe until we see you again,
John Logel, Mayor
